Claudia's blog: September!

Posted on Sep 6, 2016 6:05 PM

September 6 and the plants are still producing! The count today was at 62+ tomatoes. The Golden Girl plants have slowed considerably. I found online that they are determinant. The Rutgers have been slow but steady. The fruit over all has gotten a little smaller, but there are still some nice size fruits still out there waiting to ripen.

My family of Eastern Phoebes had done a pretty good job with bug control. However, they have now left, so the last week I have been on my own. After finding numerous Stink Bugs last night & 3 more hornworms this morning, I decided to spray this evening. This only the second time the season. I try to use as little chemicals as possible, but sometimes it is necessary.

The plants do not look great but not too bad considering our hot summer (27 90 degree days- average is 15) and the hornworms. Much better than a lot of years! I will let them go until I am sure we are running out of time for the season. I want every tomato I can get! :)
