After the last year of packing up, moving out, rebuilding and now moving back in, I am growing comfortable in my rebuilt home. The next project will be landscaping. Raw red dirt and pets do not go well together.
Landscaping plans include a green zone around the house. The green zone will be located between the circle drive and the house. I want it planted with centipede grass for low maintenance. On the sheltered east side, I want to plant my Miho Satsuma and the Improved Meyer Lemon in ground. I am also thinking my Arbequina olive might do well in this area. As much as I enjoy the satsuma fruit, I may look for another one to include in this area.
I am thinking the plantings need to be edible or herbal landscaping. I have shampoo ginger which needs to go in ground. Some of the plantings which I dug up while the house was being redone include Soapwort and Butterfly ginger which need beds of their own as well. On the west side of the yard against the fence begs for a few small fruit trees perhaps peach or plum or I had considered blueberries.
I am rebuilding two of the raised vegetable beds. If I don't redo these every few years, the tree roots have their way with them. I've been adding compost, leaves and will pick up pine bark shreds as well as organic composted manure.
Time to look forward to springtime and seed starting. The containers are ready ~ let the seed starting begin. On the list are two tomatoes... Appel and Hispanola. Time to get the lettuce going also which will be Little Gem & St. Annes' Slow Bolting. I'll direct seed the radishes. The cucumber and pepper seeds will be started later.
A start for the herb seeds, Papalo, Spilanthes, Anise Hyssop, Caraway, Cilantro (suspecting the Cilantro will protest the warm), Catnip to appease the felines, Afina Cutting Celery, Epazote and Dill Ella. Later I will start the H. sabdariffa
For flowers, Malva sylvestris ( French Hollyhock ), Rose Campion, Datura, Celosia spicata are a few.
And this evening I stole a few minutes to repot the Artemisia estafiate. Also potted up some vintage hyacinth that Nancy shared and the Leucojim Snow Drops that I had dug up to relocate. Will leave them in pots for this year till I see where things end up in the yard.
I can't help but feel excited with the gardening season after I sat the last one out. Looking forward to Spring in east by God Texas!
