Are black raspberries available as plants or do I have to start with the seeds? How long before the first berries can be harvested?

You can buy bare-root black raspberry plants from nurseries, and and sometimes you can find them in containers at local nurseries. For the first couple of years after planting, it's best to pick off the flowers and prune the flowering shoots so the plants become well established and don't divert energy from root growth to producing fruit. By the third season, you deserve those delicious berries, and the plants will be better able to supply you.
