How to distinguish S. 'Crispyn' and S. 'Crispyn / Typ Wills'

such a long time Howard J. Wills distributed a wrong plant under the name S. 'Crispyn'; it has been wide spread in the collections all over europe;

after clearing this mistake we gave this plant the addition "/Typ Wills" because it is such a beauty;

if you want to distinguish the two varieties look at the edge of the leaves;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Chivalry') | Posted on October 13, 2013 ]

this plant is not the real S. 'Chivalry'; we have had this plant in german collections too;

in 12/2010 the breeder told Erwin Geiger how his cultivar has to look like:

"S. 'Chivalry' is a velvety red, sort of like an improved more narrow-leaved version of 'Cleveland Morgan'."

the wrong plant shown here looks very similar to Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum x christii 'Collecteur Anchisi'); in germany we all placed it to the NOIDs nevertheless;

in 08/2012 we found a plant in an old collection which seems to be the right one; but it has to be checked around the year and presented to the breeder for a final conclusion;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum marmoreum 'Chocolate') | Posted on September 30, 2013 ]

comment from Alan C. Smith
(from "Sempervivums & Jovibarbas" 2. edition 1980)

Brunneifolium (dark form) - We have re-named this form as only one clone is permissible to occupy a single Cultivar name. The new name we have chosen is 'Chocolate'.

A very fine plant having slightly less compact rosettes than Brunneifolium with dark chocolate coloured rosettes. Mr. Hugh Miller verbally mentioned that he received this form from Praeger under S. marmoreum f. brunneifolium No. 2

---------

addition from me:

S. marmoreum 'Brunneifolium' = S. marmoreum f. brunneifolium - but this botanical name was never accepted by the botanists; so it was renamed like a cultivar;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Casa') | Posted on September 29, 2013 ]

I guess that S. 'Casa' has to look totally different; I can't believe the photos here were showing the right plant;

the breeder Martin Haberer is a good semps-friend of mine and we get this plant from him directly; furthermore his description won't fit to the photos here....

I will load up our photos to the database;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum arachnoideum 'Boule de Neige') | Posted on September 24, 2013 ]

the name S. 'Boule de Nigre' appears some time; but it should be only a wrong writing of the cultivar S. 'Boule de Neige'; any time we find the wrong name, the research of the source came to the same result:

the handwriting of André Smits causes this confusion; sometimes he himself made this mistake;

a cultivar S. 'Boule de Nigre' has never been named;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Bernstein') | Posted on September 23, 2013 ]

there are a lot of wrong plants with this name - often they are similar to S. 'Alchemist' but it's not sure they are;

the correct S. 'Bernstein' has to bloom yellow - all the others are wrong labeled;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum var. tectorum (boissieri)) | Posted on September 21, 2013 ]

that's no cultivar - it's a natural form; Baker is not the breeder - he first described this species;

in the past known under S. boissieri [hort. ex Baker (1879)] - later it was sortet to S. tectorum var. tectorum;

the actual name has to be:

S. tectorum var. tectorum (boissieri) - also sold as S. boissieri and S. 'Boissieri'

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum tectorum 'Beate (ll)') | Posted on September 19, 2013 ]

There are two different cultivars with the same name 'Beate.'

The photos in this database entry don't show the 'Beate' bred by Bill Keen - they show the other 'Beate,' bred by Günther Dillmann / Germany (S. tectorum - cultivar). If two different plants have exactly the same name, we in germany will give the one bred later the add-on "( II )"; I don't know how ATP wants to handle this.

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Ace of Spades') | Posted on September 11, 2013 ]

this database-entry is a duplicate of the number 610954...

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum 'Atroviolaceum Heimlich 2') | Posted on September 10, 2013 ]

that's a little bit difficult.....

the original S. 'Atroviolaceum Heimlich' should be a S. tetcorum-cultivar; but the shown plant isn't one; but there is another one in the collections which shows the real S. tectorum 'Atroviolaceum Heimlich';

because this one on the photos here is in many collections and it looks really nice we (in germany) decided to give it the name S. 'Atroviolaceum Heimlich 2' without the label tectorum and without breeder-informations (we don't know who create it);

all the photos here show this S. 'Atroviolaceum Heimlich 2'

the info also sold as: 'Atroviolaceum Secretly 2' is wrong because the word "Secretly" is only a translation of the word "Heimlich" - but this word comes from the breeder; Mina Colvin create it at the "Nursery Heimlich" in Woburn/Massachusetts/USA;

that's all we found out from germany.....if someone has other or further information please let me know;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum x fauconnettii (x angustifolium)) | Posted on September 9, 2013 ]

this plant is not a cultivar but a natural hybrid; the cultivar-name has to be deleted;

earlier the correct name was S. x angustifolium; later it was subordinated to S. x fauconnetii;

so the actual name has to be S. x fauconnetii (x angustifolium) and the parents are S. arachnoideum x S. tectorum;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum x comollii (x albidum)) | Posted on September 8, 2013 ]

this is no cultivar but a natural form; so the cultivarname has to be deleted;

the correct name is S. x albidum or S. x comollii (x albidum);

in the past S. x albidum was seen as an own hybrid-form; later it was declared as a form of S. x comollii which is a natural hybrid of S. tectorum x S. wulfenii;

[ Hen and Chicks (Sempervivum sp. from Epinel) | Posted on September 5, 2013 ]

here is something wrong....

this plant is no cultivar but collected in nature; but it's unknown to which species it belongs; there is no information about "wulfenii-hybrid" or "Formerly known as Sempervivum tectorum ex p x wulfenii Epinel";

without knowing the species it is correctly named "Sempervivum ssp. from Epinel"

in 2008 the breeder Martin Haberer (Germany) give this plant the name 'Epinella' - but only cultivars have to get a name...plants found in nature have to be named with species and location;

so we have to delete this name and call it "S. sp. from Epinel" and declare it as collected in nature;
