The southern subspecies of this variable succulent with glaucous, terete, fingerlike leaves is from the Pacific coast of Baja California, ranging from south of El Rosario to near Santa Rosaliíta, roughly corresponding to the Valley of the Cirios found inland. It differs from the northern type subspecies in being octoploid instead of diploid.
