This genus of tree aloes was created in 2013 for a group of large-growing plants to 18m from Southern Africa and East Africa. The members of Aloidendron are genetically distinct from Aloe. This group may absorb the Madagascan A. suzannae in the future, once the question of Aloestrela is resolved.
There are currently 6 species of Aloidendron, all of which branch. Three are glaucous, yellow-flowered plants from the dry winter rainfall area of northwestern South Africa and southern Namibia (A. dichotomum, A. pillansii, A. ramosissimum). Two are orange- or pink-flowered plants from the summer rainfall area of northeastern South Africa and southern Mozambique (A. barberae, A. tongaense). One is a red-flowered plant from Somalia (A. eminens). A single-stemmed, red- or yellowish orange-flowered plant from Arabia (Aloe sabaea) was placed in Aloidendron for a few years but returned to Aloe in 2019.
