I love the bloom on Storm Shelter but so far, the plant has not been very prolific for me. Granted, there have been circumstances! It did great it's first year ( 2019), planted by the deck. But in May 2020 a tree fell on the deck, so everything near it had to be moved to another location. This seemed to bum out my Storm Shelter, I didn't get many blooms off it this year or any perceptible growth. Other plants that were moved at the same time ( Happy Returns, Cranberry Cove, Margaret Seawright) did really well by comparison. Granted, those were older established plants but I had high hopes for an Emmerich. Let's see how it does next summer. If it doesn't like it's new location, maybe it will have to be moved again.

Performance has been mixed, with a couple of years having very low bud count. A short plant by nature. I've heard people north of here rave about it, but just shows how freeze/thaw, with little snow cover, can wreak havoc. An intense color. Mike Derrow has produced a real winner using Storm Shelter to produce Vision Seeker, which has good height, larger size, and another intense color.

Living art.
I purchased Storm Shelter in 2019 from a nursery. 2020 was it's first full year in my garden. I didn't have anything quite like it and I like to add diversity to the garden. It did not give lots of blooms but it did rebloom late season. I'll know a lot more about this one at the end of 2021.

Almost picked this one up in full bloom at Home Depot last year (just in case anyone wants it this year they may stock more - they also had Ruby Spider). But, I had run out of space at that point. Still, a 2-gallon pot for less than $20 and in full flower, I do regret my choice sometimes....like today.

2021 update

A much better year for Storm Shelter. It had it's longest bloom season with the highest bud count so far.I count 37 flowers between July 2 to August 7th. A true Midseason. I just love the color and eye, being a fool for Purple.

2022, Storm Shelter had an ok year, not as good as last year. It bloomed from July 8-31, with 27 blooms. It started and ended the season with 6 fans. This is one of my favorite purples…

2023 update…bloom was better than last year, flowering from July 10-August 14, with at least 37 blooms. The plant refuses to grow however, remaining at the same six fans. Most of my Emmerich plants are super slow growers here.
