I bought 2 ceramic pots for my amaryllis bulbs and planted the bulbs in their new homes. I used fresh potting soil and didn't plant the bulbs too deeply. I'm hoping they will root well and grow. I didn't drench the soil before planting, but it was moist. I won't water for at least a month now.
Below are a few pics of the bulbs.
After being cleaned up and placed in water filled cups, the roots took in the water and actually grew quite a bit. Below is a pic of the recent root growth after 7 days in the cups.
The second pic is the new pots. I wanted to put all 3 bulbs in one pot, but the larger pot wasn't large enough for all 3 bulbs. So, I planted 2 in the larger pot. And just one in the smaller pot.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I took the wax off the amaryllis bulbs. It came off easily. The bulbs look pretty good. No mold. I pulled off the outer layer of skin and scraped up the bottom a bit. I then took them and placed them in cups just so ONLY the rooted area touches the water. I'm going to leave them like this for awhile and see if the roots start to grow. If things go right, I'll move them into pots at a later time.
It's about 30 degrees now, but feels like 18. We had our first heavy snow. It started overnight and stopped about 2 this afternoon. We probably got about 9 inches of snow. Pretty dry, and light. I was looking at the weather forecast for the next 10 days - gonna get very cold. Low single digits for the highs!
When it get cold like this I seem to get into a "cooking/baking" mood. Soups, crockpot meals, cookies, muffins ... I gotta stop with the sweets, though.
Our cat, Patch, is so ... bored. He goes out. And then he wants to come right back in. He doesn't like the cold, the snow, or having his paws get wet. Hubby made a "cat house" for him a few months ago. A few months ago it was a LOT WARMER and he loved staying out for hours, sometimes all night. If it was raining, or it was a bit chilly, he was very content to curl up in his little house. It's pretty insulated and we lalso lined the bottom with some old t-shirts for him to lay on. Lately, with the cold and/or snow, he prefers staying in indoors with us. This morning though he ventured out despite the snow, and I snapped this pic of him in his "house".
He was there maybe 10 minute, then back inside with us!
Stopped at Lowe's today and bought a pack of dwarf snapdragons and 2 packs of Shirley poppy seeds(double). I'll probably winter sow the snaps sometime in February/March. With the poppy seeds, I'll do half and half. I'll WS some poppy seeds in Feb/March, but I'll wait til late March to direct sow the other half. I want to be able to scratch the soil up a bit. We should be getting some 40-50 degree days by then to do that. I have a mixed bed of perennials that they would look nice in.
I saw some pretty pink primroses in the supermarket today, They were a $1.29 a piece, so I bought two plants. Just wanted to have some color in the living room. I almost bought a pot of tete-a-tete daffodils, but they were pretty much in full flower. I'll have to look around and see if I can find any still in bud stage.
I also did a walk-around the property. Still a light snow cover, but some bare spots, too. I had to re-wrap a small pieris shrub that I had covered in the Fall. I had decided to cover it this winter since last year it took a beating. It faces the front road, and last year because we had lots of snow, the plows kept covering it with heavy snow piles every time they passed. When spring came it had lots of broken branches and all the flower buds were gone. It had bloomed beautifully in other years. I'm hoping by covering it, it will do better this year.
Nothing much else new. Snow is predicted starting late tonight into tomorrow. 3-6 inches. Got food in the house and old dvds to watch. I'm set :-))
Yay! My seed order from Baker Creek came yesterday. I didn't order much, but happy to receive seeds for:
white marigolds
dwarf mixed marigolds
candytuft
tall vining nasturtiums
*free seed packet was for romaine lettuce
I went to Walmart today to pick up few things, and they had seeds! I picked up a pack of alyssum and snapdragon seeds. I was looking for annual poppy seeds, but couldn't find any. When I get a chance I'll stop at Lowe's.
