Enormous selection of annuals and perennials, beautiful hanging baskets, fantastic prices, friendly service. Lancaster is known for its nurseries, and Black Creek is worth the additional distance north of the city of Lancaster to East Earl. I've been making annual spring road trips here for several years, paying roughly half what I would pay locally, even beating box store prices. They have trade gallon perennials for $5-7, quart pots for even less, 6-packs of annuals and veggies, clematis and hellebores at unbelievable savings. There's also a great selection of containers and garden ornaments. If you have any space left in your car, squeeze in some potting mix or mulch (they even have cocoa mulch). Highly, highly recommended!

By critterologist on Sep 2, 2021 9:09 AM, concerning Watermark Woods Native Plant Nursery:

Beautiful nursery with a wide selection of both "straight" species and named varieties, including so many that I haven't seen offered for sale anywhere else. Staff is knowledgeable, and signage is excellent. With very few exceptions, plants are native to the mid-Atlantic region, but that doesn't mean all plants will be just right for your garden, so ask for help with your selections. Prices are good (higher than box stores, but lower than average for local nurseries IMO). They have perennials for both sun and shade and are just getting into trees & shrubs. For more information (and photos), see the "idea" article I wrote, "Watermark Woods: Growing Native." https://garden.org/ideas/view/...

CT Daylily is my go-to place for cutting-edge daylilies that have the latest and greatest toothy, patterned, and other traits. You pay a premium for these premium plants but they're worth it. I've always received plants correct for my order and of excellent quality. Communication with them has always been good as well. I highly recommend CT Daylily.

I'd never ordered plants in the mail before I have had good results trading some succulent cuttings with others over the years, and a friend sent a coupon. As I was browsing, I saw so many plants that I wanted and have never seen in person so I ended up ordering 10 plants in 2" pots, 1 unpotted Sempervivum plug, an unrooted piece of cholla (Cylindropuntia), and a cute little pot. Everything looks great, and arrived on time, very well packaged.

I love tiny plants and I am pleasantly surprised that some of these have even smaller foliage than I'd imagined from the pics, and the plants with naturally larger foliage are bigger starts than I was hoping for. Prices are a little higher than a similarly sized plant @ a BBS, but you're probably not going to see these plants at one of those stores, and they are in MUCH better soil that doesn't make me fear that they will die the first time I water them, and the plants I received seem vigorously healthy.

I would absolutely order again, and recommend.

Love this pot.

By Nikk1kitty on Aug 5, 2021 2:23 AM, concerning Hidden Valley Hibiscus:

I love Hidden Valley Hibiscus! It was a great find! My plants all arrived healthy and were handled with care. I love the large selection of hybrid hibiscus plants. I never knew there were so many color combinations and varieties. They have a really detailed selection of care topics and troubleshooting. They have all the items you should need to care for your plant and to get the best blooms. No more googling for help! I head to their website first when I have any concerns or questions about these beautiful exotic plants!
I personally have a black thumb by nature. I kill almost every plant I touch! I'm cursed. But I haven't been cursed since I started getting my plants from hidden valley. I grew up with a backyard full of hibiscuses, plumerias, iris' and much more. My mother has a very large collection of tropical plants that weigh over 50 pounds a pot! It is hard work but she makes it look easy. I won't ever have a yard like my mom.. but I'm trying to get a small little paradise of my own.
I have a total of 7 hibiscus plants and bushes. All potted and stored in the garage from around November to February or so depending on the crazy Texas weather. I have a schizophrenia hibiscus I purchased last Spring as well as a purple hybrid plant called Stormy Night. I bought 4" plants that were ready to be repotted on arrival. They matured fast and thrived even through the unusual "Texas Blizzard" we had this year. Below zero temperatures is something we rarely experience but we had that and more! It killed off most of our in ground plants and bushes. Killed unkillable plants.. and my hibiscus were inside of our uninsulated garage that on a normal year is the perfect for them.. this year they experienced Below 60 degree temps and still survived! The plants became infested with aphids while in the garage. I thought for sure I had lost them all! But luckily I had purchased the fertilizer, pest control products and followed their care instructions and my aphid problem disappeared and my plants thrived! They bloomed once by the first winter. I was not expecting blooms until at least the following Spring! This year they are blooming like wildfire!!! I highly recommend joining their newsletter and setting a bookmark! They are the only hibiscus retailers (?) that I use now. Their products and prices are comparable and competitive but even better.. you know you are getting the best! No bugs hitching a ride or dehydrated neglected overpriced plants that won't make it to next year! I've had all that happen with previous purchases from other hibiscus retailers. IMO Hidden Hibiscus is the only place I trust when it comes to beautiful blooms and just to keep my beautiful plants beating the odds and not be a victim of my cursed thumb 👍🏻🌺🌸

Wonderful, big fans with massive root systems! I was surprised at how big everything was considering that they are in zone 5 like I am. Such a nice family, great communication, reasonable prices and they only charge what they pay for the shipping. I would definitely order from them again.

By cinvasko on Jul 8, 2021 12:43 PM, concerning Iris Meisters:

Fabulous folks! I now make it a point to order from them every year. They never disappoint, in fact they exceed expectations. They send very healthy, large, and clean rhizomes, plus several well chosen bonuses. In fact, I assume they are members here because my bonuses are selections from my wish list! I think it's amazing that they take to time to check on something like that. A+++ all the way.

Great local nursery for gardeners in the Chicagoland area. They have two locations, one in Naperville and a bigger location in Aurora. Wide selection of perennials (many unique), roses (including David Austin line), clematis, succulents, annuals and trees. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

By jathton on Jun 22, 2021 11:25 PM, concerning MONET'S TABLE:

Spending my teen years [when not in school] in the kitchen of my father's restaurant gave me a healthy aversion for the food business. Luckily, the experience also helped me develop an attraction to food & cooking.

Let's start with the author: Claire Joyes' husband Jean-Marie is the great-grandson of Madame Monet. They live at Giverny and were closely involved with a faithful restoration of Monet's gardens. Their circumstances give this book a unique perspective... and Joyes spends better than half the book talking about life at Giverny for Monet and his family.
She paints a very interesting and insightful portrait of that life..................................

"Monet always retained the predilection for over-indulgence that was characteristic of the French middle class at this period..."

"... the recipe for the Monets' bouillabaisse came from Paul Cezanne, the recipe for their bread rolls came from Jean Millet. Their tarte Tatin was a souvenir of their visits to the Tatin sisters themselves, to sample this famous dish."

"Taste is a complex subject. Not only is it highly personal but it also must always be considered in context."

The second half of the book consists of recipes Monet was familiar with and ate on a regular basis. In this area I'll just say the Genoa Cake and Charlotte Lyses's Stuffed White Onions are terrific.

The book is almost over-stuffed with beautiful photos of the gardens and the inside of the home. The Japanese bridge on a misty day [page 105] is wonderfully evocative of... well, maybe you should just "sneak a peek" for yourself.

By wandajsuddenlinkne on Jun 19, 2021 4:16 PM, concerning Onalee's Seeds:

I placed an order for Coral Vine seeds on the 15th and received notification the same day that a shipping label had been created. This was followed up with an email from Onalee's that the order was being shipped and would arrive on the 19th. I was so gratified that the order arrived on the 18th. The packaging was very professional and the seeds (with extra seeds) were in very good condition. The package included all the detailed directions for planting and answered any questions I could have. I have used directions and am now waiting for sprouts to appear. I would highly recommend Onalee's as being Number 1 on my list for online shopping. I will order again.

I received my first small order from Colonial Creek today--just before they stopped shipping for the summer. The plants were very well packaged and healthy. I would definitely consider ordering from here again. They have a nice assortment of herbs and scented geraniums.

By Hortaholic on Jun 15, 2021 12:33 AM, concerning Fedco Seeds:

I'm with Halli! Look at the colored pictures elsewhere then order here for lots less! They do have a colored picture of each kind on their website. It's super easy to order there. Being able to choose the size of package with lower per unit prices on larger packages is a big plus.

They even have tables in their catalog with longevity expectations for each kind of seeds, both vegetables and flowers. Who else tells you that? You'll know you can order 2 or 3 years' worth of beet seeds, but not onions. Also each packet is labeled with the germination percentage and test date - another thing you won't see from the big companies that charge more. This spring I received a refund on a packet of onion seeds when their later retesting showed they were not up to their standards. What company has ever done that?

You can expect high germination, true-to-type seeds. Honest and informative descriptions that help guide you to the best choices for your needs and growing conditions. They'll actually tell you the cons in addition to the pros.

Everything is GMO free. Fedco supports organic growing and offers many organic seed varieties. They have an Organic Supplies division, a bulbs and tubers Division (Moose Tubers) and a tree and live plant division.

The catalog has some political humor. You can probably guess which way it leans. It probably costs them some business. I chalk it up to Yankee stubbornness and independence.

Free shipping is offered above a minimum order. Otherwise it has flat rate shipping for packet seeds, for a lower fee than most. Some sites charge more for shipping the more you spend. Why should a $10 packet of 20 tomato seeds raise the shipping more than a $5 two -ounce one of beans? Irrational customer gouging. Not at Fedco!

By Achantal on Jun 6, 2021 2:01 PM, concerning King's County Nurseries (Brooklyn, NY):

This is my local nursery and I love it. They have a great range and supply of all the plants, seedlings, seeds, and supplies that any urban gardener might want. (They also supply a lot of landscapers and have a huge variety of in-ground plants/trees --that's just not what I need.) They patiently answer all of my questions and have so much experience and advice. I am so happy I'm able to support a local business over a chain or big box store.

By Achantal on Jun 6, 2021 1:44 PM, concerning Miracle-Gro Performance Organics All Purpose Plant Nutrition Granules:

This stuff is like crack for my plants and vegetables (which are all in containers). They LOVE it and it makes them flourish--to an almost Little Shop of Horrors degree! I'm someone whose thumb is more brown than green, and I will never be without it.
