Love the idea of Violet Syrup, which I've never heard of, and LOVED the tribute to your dad. My hubby mows our elderly neighbor's yard for her. As I was taking my twin granddaughters across her backyard to say hi to her, I noticed some violets in the grass. It has been so long since I've seen them (and much longer since I've seen Spring Beauties - a favorite childhood memory). I exclaimed, "Look, girls! Violets!", and stooped to pick some. At that moment, my husband yelled, "Don't touch them - I sprayed them with weed killer!"
