Have you looked at any of the David Austin roses? They have climber varieties. David Austins were bred to resemble the old roses but are more disease resistant. Most have great scent too.

David Austin roses are all so beautiful. That's a really good idea. I'll search for a thornless reblooming rose since it's at my entrance. I did not take the thorns into consideration when I planted the ones that are there. Thank you for the reminder!

This is why I planted Cancan in that spot. This is from Heirloom Roses description on their website.
Cancan is an excellent addition to the hardy Climber collection from Will Radler, breeder of The Knock Out Rose. Her unique flowers are bright fuchsia to light pink with creamy white towards the center and edges of the petals. Cancan has excellent disease resistance and is a continual bloomer set against semi-glossy foliage. Perfect for zones 5-9, she will climb upwards of 10' while staying moderately compact at just 3-4' wide.

That one is pretty. I wonder why it is growing slowly for you. For thornless, the one that seems to be top of the list is Zephirine Drouhin, which you mentioned. I love roses, but I'm mostly woodland, so not much sun or open space for them. I keep trying in various spots, though those spots are few and far between. Good luck finding the perfect one for your arbor!

Could be the really crappy soil its in LOL
Could also be bermuda grass that is so aggressive. Whether this stays or goes that area is getting a massive overhaul this summer!
