Last year three of my common ditch lilies had cross pollinated with something else & two of the three are shaping up to be a thick, healthy looking cluster of leaves with a wider leaf base than what the common ditch lilies have. They haven't bloomed yet but are starting to put out green stems and green buds right now. My question would be when they bloom, I'd like to have them identified as to what they are, In order to do that do I navigate my way into the forum?

Moved to the Daylily forum.

When they cross pollinate, you would have had to plant the resulting seeds, (or the plant would have dropped them) and then it would have taken a year or two for them to bloom. The resulting flowers may resemble the parents or not. They are an entirely new plant so there's nothing to ID. They do not come true to the parents.

And if they are the common ditch lily, they are sterile. So the difference in leaves could be environmental.

@Flip72a It's very rare for Hemerocallis fulva 'Europa' (ditch lily) to set seeds even from deliberate hand-pollinations. Did you actually plant seeds? 'Europa' spreads by rhizomes so if these are small plants that appeared a short distance from the already planted ones then that's probably what happened. In that case they too will be 'Europa' although it still seems a bit soon for them to be flowering.

@Calif_Sue @Char I was looking at "ditch lily" in the database and there are only a few pics correctly under H. fulva 'Europa' but most are under plain H. fulva although still called "ditch lily". 'Europa' is correctly listed as triploid but plain H. fulva is listed as diploid, which is also correct for the species but not for the actual ditch lily, 'Europa'. Is there some way of sorting this out? It's misleading for people to think that the common "ditch lily" is a diploid especially considering that some entities are classifying it as invasive even though it only rarely sets seed.

You can enlarge each incorrect photo, scroll down and propose a move to the correct entry.
I may try to tackle some today but have a full weekend planned and may not get to them for a while. Green Grin!

@Calif_Sue I don't know if it would even be possible to tell which is correct or not from the flower pictures. I would imagine most of the H. fulva pics are actually 'Europa' but it's also not technically incorrect for there to be diploid H. fulva as well, it's just not the "ditch lily". I don't think the flowers could be told apart in general.

If I'm following this correctly you would like "ditch lily" removed from H. fulva as a common name rather than moving images around?

@Char That's probably the easiest thing, even though most of the pics under H. fulva are probably 'Europa' and when it boils down to it, 'Europa' is considered a variant of H. fulva anyway. There's probably not a perfect solution at this point. It just seems odd that there are so few pics under 'Europa' when it's actually the common type (in North America that is).

Ok. I think I fixed it. Let me know if I didn't.

Hi, @Flip72a and Welcome! You have some nice Stella de Oro plants! Looks like you have a great space to fill with plants.

What I do if I am not sure which picture is which, I click on "Preview" to make sure before clicking "Finished". You are doing great! Just getting the pictures posted is trouble for some folks.

My Eastern Ditch lilies are starting to bloom but I'm waiting for more of them to open up before taking any pictures of them & my 3 clusters that had changed over - putting out a totally new kind of flower might take another 2 weeks before they bloom. I almost forgot to mention, For years and years there was a broken row of Orange Ditch Lilies in front of a produce market & for the past 3 yrs. all those Ditch Lilies flowers have been changing over to yellow. I've seen the yellow ones before like that out by the road at our local post office & I believe those had an orange streak running down the middle of those flower peddles but they are no longer there because I guess it was the DOT or county that widen the deep ditch and planted grass there
