[ Japanese Woodland Stonecrop (Sedum makinoi 'Ogon') | Posted on December 6, 2021 ]

Sedum makinoi 'Ogon' has leaves that emerge white/pale gold and fade to a lime green over time. Mature stems are green with pink/cream blush when extremely stressed.

Unless very established, this plant does not overwinter well in containers. (In zone 7A, a cutting of this in a garden bed in the winter would barely survive)

[ Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwenzhu' | Posted on December 2, 2021 ]

"Huangwenzhu" is 2 words. "Huang" which means "yellow", "wen zhu" which generally means bamboo mound, or something similar in that way.

This is a variegated bamboo with yellow variegation.

[ Ornithogalum adseptentrionesvergentulum | Posted on November 29, 2021 ]

This is currently the longest scientific plant name, at 38 letters.

Runner up is at 37 letters, Austrocephalocereus dolichospermaticus.

[ Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) | Posted on November 18, 2021 ]

I strongly dislike the plant...
Sure, it smells great.... but........................................................
It gets everywhere, not just from neighboring properties, but also from birds and animals eating the berries and spreading them.

If left untamed it grows up to giant woody bushes that can be 7 or 8 feet tall!!!! It is very painful to cut them down.

The back of the leaves is silvery with brown dots. Red berries in fall.

[ White Moss (Leucobryum albidum) | Posted on November 2, 2021 ]

Every year when this moss does asexual reproduction, it drops and sheds a lot of leaves. These dropped leaves are propagatable.

[ White Margin Snow Rose (Buchozia japonica 'Improved') | Posted on October 8, 2021 ]

This serissa is very compact and is highly variegated.

Flowers are also white and are regular sized.

[ Pink Snow Rose (Buchozia 'Ahiro Pink') | Posted on October 8, 2021 ]

This serissa has medium sized leaves, with a thin white edge of variegation. It is not a compact variety.

It has large, toothed light pink flowers .

[ Buchozia japonica | Posted on October 8, 2021 ]

Serissa is probably one of my favorite mini-trees to use, because it has pretty flowers and tiny leaves. It is also easy to get the "matured trunk and roots" look.

Serissa foetida means 'foul smelling' in a way, which refers to when it is trimmed, it has an "interesting" smell.

[ Water Spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) | Posted on September 30, 2021 ]

A common vegetable you can buy at Asian supermarkets, it is easy to grow from cuttings. The stems are usually cooked without the leaves and are hollow.

In chinese they are "Kong xin cai", basically "Hollow Vegetable".

There seem to be 3 different "forms" or "types" of this.
There is my favorite form, a purple flowered one, a white flowered one, and another form that has very small flowers (also white).

[ Salvinia cucullata | Posted on September 29, 2021 ]

This is my favorite salvinia. S. cucullata has tear-drop shaped leaves that form a tiny mat. They stick up facing one direction, and are very small. It is a "small"-"medium" salvinia.

Commonly known as "ogre ear" or "shreks ear".

When you press down on the pads of leaves, water runs up the crack in the leaf, filling up as a water orb (the leaves of salvinia are hydrophobic). It is very satisfying to watch.
