Yesterday after returning home, there was a big box waiting on me. It was the order I'd been anxiously awaiting since I received shipping confirmation from Fred.
I opened the box and found these wonderful fans,
Of course, I stood them up to take the shot. Here they are laid out on the patio table,
Here are the individual name tags,
I also received a gift of Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Fred Manning'). This one, I've wanted for some time too.
The want is over, but now the wait begins. The wait for that first scape to appear and the face of the CV Fred Manning staring back at me!
First let me get the ugly over with. Yes, ugly in the form of Daylily RUST. I've never had any rust to amount to anything, but with the mild winter we've seen, I am seeing more of the ugly this year. It got ahead of me before I sprayed. So, the past weekend was spent treating with a systemic and spraying all of my daylily's. I also took the opportunity to fertilize every thing as the outlook of rain on the forecast was promising. Well, last night the rain was delivered and we received about an inch or slightly more, with more forecasted for later this week.
Moving on to the not so ugly. Last night I made the mistake of looking at the Lily Auction again. Well wouldn't you know it... I bid again. Yes, I placed bids on three more CVs. This morning, I awoke to discover that my bids went unattested again, so I won the right to pay for them. I will receive these later in the month at our local meeting. I will list the wins below, but wanted to add that I am anxiously awaiting another delivery. The deliver should arrive later in the week from none other than our own Fred Manning. I have purchased seed from Fred, but this will be the first plants received. I'll post pictures of the fans when they arrive.
So without further delay -the wins from last night,
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Cooler than Me')
I'm an active member of the Choctawhatchee Hemerocallis Society in Defuniak Springs, FL. Every fourth Tuesday of the month we gather at our local extensions office to hold our meeting, and yesterdays was a good one. You can tell that lots of our members are out in their gardens and flower beds. They are getting their hands in the soil and more than their daily needs of Vitamin D from the sunshine. You can tell, because the conversations keep us going all the way up until the local extensions office were locking the doors. Our presentation and guest speaker was Mr. Mark Sattelmier of Abundant Daylily's. He is also one of our members and it was indeed a pleasure to chat with. He shared with us how it all started for him, the locations he has been and of course the past present and some future daylily introductions. One could only sit and drool as the presentation advanced from one frame to the next.
I also received the four CVs that I had won on the Lily Auction from Randy and Cindy Fleming. They too are members of our club. OBTW, the ones received are the last four pictures from my last post. I already know the beds and the spots they will be going in. I can wait to see these in my yard and cant wait to share the photo's.
Closing this with a hope that you too are out there getting your hands in the soil and receiving more than enough Vitamin D from the sun...
Good morning, I have posted most of these in The thread "What are YOU adding for 2017!!!" in Daylilies forum However, I thought that I would consolidate my Daylily orders that will be arriving here in the spring along with pictures of each. This should help me to keep track of these now and later when they bloom and if the markers are misplaced. Darn tree rats!
I ordered these from Fred Manning of the Daylily Place,
Yesterday morning I prepared two of the greenhouse type seed flats that I have, and sewed seed for the planned raised beds. I have four 6 x 4 ft beds planned and mapped using a garden planner I found online.
Anyway, In a small flat are tomatoes. I have three mini varieties, Tiny Tim, red grape and a red currant. Also sewn are a San Mariano paste tomato, Brandywine and Chalk's Early Jewel.
In a larger flat, I have broccoli, brussel sprouts, sweet and ruby onions, bell and sweet banana peppers.
Also planned are some three sister plantings of corn and beans with squash. Lots of leafy cut and come again lettuce types with spinach and Tuscan kale in there somewhere.
Last night I received an email about another Daylily Auction win. This time I scored Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Lillian's Thin Ice') I have wanted this one for a little while, and in a month or so, I'll finally have it in my collection.
