Another border bed...
Posted on Sep 23, 2016 2:25 PM

Last Saturday, I started another border bed along the east fence in the back yard. It is about 5' wide and 51' long. I should be able to get a few perennials in it. What do you think?

Anyway, after tilling the soil I removed two wheel barrows full of roots and grass clumps. Today after tilling again, I removed another wheel barrow full. I think I'm just about ready to begin adding organic materials and amendments to the soil.

Pictures coming later, first I have to take them.

Winning the Lottery or Early Christmas...
Posted on Sep 16, 2016 7:50 AM

Well I will tell you that it feels like I have won a lottery or that Christmas came early with the CVs listed below...

But before we get to the list of names let me tell you this story,

I had a chance to meet Edith Sliger a few years ago when I started collecting daylily's again. My mother, Sister and I took a trip up to Edith's Gardens in Clarksville, GA back in the spring of 2014. When we arrived, she was on hands and knees digging Liriope from a spot so she could add a new white Hydrangea just received.

Below is a photo of its progress some two years later,

After our chatting with Edith, she put me to work right away as I helped her get some of the huge clumps of grass out of the spot. When I did, she helped me put it in the back of my truck. Edith is in her 90s but she still getting it done in the garden today. She is the nicest lady and has a couple CVs named for her. I tell you this because thanks to my Mama, I have the yellow Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Edith Allen Sliger') from that visit. We've both wanted the other Rose/ Pink Coral CV for a few years now and I was finally able to acquire it from In the Neighborhood Daylilies. I received two, two fan pieces of the CV so I was able to share. Also purchased BEB and received BKS as a bonus.

Last weekend my Family visited from NE GA.
As mentioned in my previous blog post, we decided to visit with Cindy and Randy Fleming of Dragon's Mead Daylily's. I had won a few CVs on the LA they had listed, so I picked those up along with a couple others I chose and a few my DW had picked out. They are are listed below,

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Double Screamer')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Get Jiggy')

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Purple Crowned Fairy')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Tangerine Truffles')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Tiny Tease')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Ashton's Giggles')

During the family visit, I received early Christmas gifts from Mama and Sister or it sure feels like Christmas gifts or perhaps the Daylily Lottery. The bed of my Bother-in-Laws truck was loaded down.
See the list,

Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Twin Dragons')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'White Wolf')
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Wispy Rays')

There were a few others too, but they will have to be named later when I see their pretty faces.

All these should keep me busy for a few weekends, building a new bedding area and getting these all settled in there new spots. Next I will have to fill those pots back up and pay it forward in Dec.

Family Visit...
Posted on Sep 13, 2016 9:59 AM

Well it's been another month passed, since my last post. So I thought I had better get at it again. The heat and humidity seem to be lingering and it has made it difficult to get motivated to accomplish much in the gardens.

However, I couldn't let Mama see how bad some of my beds had grown up. So, I managed to get them cleaned up before she, my sister and sister's family arrived for a visit over the weekend. We had a wonderful visit and spent a little time at the beach and one day, took a trip over to Dragon's Mead Daylily's. Cindy and Randy Fleming are such wonderful folks and we enjoyed visiting their gardens. I had to pick up a few of their CVs, purchased on the LA and they had one or two that Mama was after. So we loaded up the pickup and took off. I will also report that I realized another small success that day, because I managed to get the DW to pick out another three CVs. : )) I can't wait to get her in a garden during peak bloom.

So let me also tell you, that the family visit was like Christmas as I received 30+ CVs from Mama and sister! Don't worry, I shared a few. In December I will fill the pots that their gifts were in, and share a few more!

No pictures this time, but maybe later. Right now, I have work to do!

August already...
Posted on Aug 11, 2016 10:27 AM

It's been a whole month since my last post, but this is an attempt to catch up. It's also hard to believe that August is not already here, but almost half over.

I thought I would add some photos of one of the perennial borders I started in the spring. my previous post will show its progress.

One of the things learned is that some of the spacing should have been more than what was listed on the garden tags. I guess that will be remedied when the humidity breaks and we get some cooler temps. Speaking of humidity, it and the rainfall for the month of August are nuts. The last 10+ days, we've received at least 1/2" or more on everyone of those days. a couple of those were 1-1.5" There have been a few breaks during the day with brief times that the sun has broken thru. Last Saturday was one of those days and I managed to build a new seedling bed for some of the daylily seeds that have germinated and sprouted. I was lucky a couple times and won some seed from Fred ( @Spunky1 ) and from Judy ( @judydu2 ) on the Lily Auction. Here are some of the eager seedlings from Fred's seed.

With these and about 50 other seeds in the plugs, I am going to fill up that seedling bed fast and have plans already to add on. I still have some seed being stored in the fridge. Below is one of the crosses of 'Lee's loss' and a NOID.

Here's the Pod and some the seeds,

Also, purchased a few plants on the LA and from In the Neighborhood Daylily Garden scheduled to be delivered in September. Also in September, a family visit will yield some of those my mother and sister had reserved for me. Guess I had better get another bed started along the other fence. It looks like I will have a busy fall... I say, bring it on!

Have a great day...
