Rain and scapes...
Posted on Mar 28, 2016 7:28 AM

After four days of pretty much, continuous rain it finally stopped late yesterday afternoon. Which, allowed me to get a pictures of Daylily's with scapes. One is 'Helix' which is listed as an EE and the other is Country Pride which is listed as an E bloomer. This will be their FBE for my garden... I cant wait to see them.

More Progress
Posted on Mar 21, 2016 8:31 AM

Well, the weekend was spent creating more bedding areas for daylilies and soon, other plants. Ok, primarily Daylily's but I do have plans to add other perennials at some point.

My neighbor was generous enough to loan me his tiller so off to work I went. Well, that was until I remember that I needed to move an irrigation line over about a foot or two to accommodate one of the new beds. But, with that new line spliced in and cured with no leeks, I was able to get the second bed created in the front yard. At the end of yesterday, I was thankful for the use of the tiller.

Below is the picture,

Planted in this bed along with the Liriope's, are,

'Art Gallery Fringe'
'Country Pride'
'Distant Star'
'Donna Mead'
'Double Bold One'
'Edith Allen Sliger'
'Empire Returns'
'Joyful Walk'
'Rowdy Purple'
'Wild Horses'

I also started on some bedding areas in the back yard while waiting on the irrigation lines to cure. I will get photos of it soon and share...
I temporarily planted some other daylily's in it until I can get their permanent bed made. These are some of the ones with Native American names for the planned Heritage bed.

Okay, so these aren't daylily's but here are a couple other photo's of things blooming.
One is a 'Jane Cowl' Hibiscus. The bloom is a little faded as it is a much richer orange when the bloom first opens. However, beautiful none the less...

Also blooming is one of the Windmill Palms that came with the house.

And so it begins...
Posted on Mar 7, 2016 2:55 PM

What a beautiful weekend we were given here in the Florida Panhandle.

And, so it begins...

Saturday was spent raking leaves and building new flower beds. I spent about an hour raking and then I elected to use the mower. Where, they were shredded and captured in the bag. I scattered them in the surrounding trees around the property but, a few were added to the composter of course.

When all the leaves were taken care of, work began on one of several planned bedding areas in the front yard. Below are a couple of shots that were taken. In the first picture you will notice a bed on the right side. Planted in it are 2 different Caladium, Lilies of the Valley, 2 different Astilbe and some Elephant ears. Hope they all come up soon. I did notice some emerging growth on the Astilbe but somehow didn't take a picture. Maybe I'll take a few after they are growing a little more. Sure hope they all do well here with the heat of our summer. Also at some point, I will add hosta's and a couple bleeding hearts that are growing in pots. On the left you will see the beginnings of the bed for some of the potted daylily's. I am considering other accompanying plants, like Liriope, perhaps Aztec for a variegated contrast to the Lily's green foliage. Or, something similar. The second picture is just a little closer look.

Here are those,

I added some amendments to the soil after relocating the grass to other areas with bare spots. Below you will see the amendments added. I really like the Sta-Green garden soil. It’s a darn good mix IMHO and have used it in most of the potted daylily's. This mix has rich soil along with some sand and pine fines mixed in it. Also added several bags of mushroom compost and about 1/2 bag of alfalfa pellets to the entire bed. Also sprinkled in were several cups of Milorganite, before it was all turned by hand with a turning fork. The curved bed is about 30 foot long and about 4 feet in the widest area.I really need to invest in a rototiller. Btw, the pictures only show when I started adding the amendments.

Some are hard dormant and are just waking from their resting period. But, here are a few of my potted Daylily's.

Friday night the bunny buffet was open again, and here's the evidence. This was after sprinkling a couple tablespoons of Milorganite to all the pots earlier that day. I guess this guy was just to hungry to mind the smell. Although, it did seem to curve its appetite as this is the only one chewed on.

Below is the 'Cluster Muster' x 'Prairie Wild Fire' seedling that was chewed on quite a few times in the past. That is before I moved it to the top shelf of a plant stand I made a couple years ago. Also beside it are a few other seedlings I have. The picture of the long window box has more 'Prairie Wild Fire' cross, seedlings. I love that Red CV.

Not to be forgotten are a few things being assembled for the transformation of the back yard. I plan to have some Carolina and Confederate Jasmine trained along the chained link fence at some point. Not pictured is the confederate.

Also scored a couple of the Black Diamond series Crape Myrtles on clearance, one white and the other a blush.

Peter Cottontail

Well, its has been a little bit since my last blog post. But it isn't from lack of content to type, just a little busy these days.

Anyway, if you may remember my last blog 'Breakfast Buffet' was titled that because something was eating the foliage on the daylily's. After a couple days, I finally managed to get the trail cam up to capture the hungry critter making meals out of my CVs. After several days, that turned into a couple weeks there were no images capture. Then it happened, I had 33 images on the cam, my excitement grew at the anticipation of capturing the varmint red handed or with a mouth full of goodies. However I had noticed that no further damage had occurred to the daylily's a plus sure, but still the excitement grew. Well, that was until I plugged in the camera to my TV to view what had triggered the pictures and it revealed nothing. Yep, nothing!
So, still puzzled but with no further damage, I didn't put the cam back up. well, as a habit, I usually turn on the flood lights around the house to take on last peak at things before heading to bed each night. Low and behold guess who was in the lawn, you guessed it, Peter Cottontail had mad his arrival. I watched him for a few minutes and when I opened the sliding glass door, he tore off for the fence and under he went. Scurrying thru the woods and he was gone! Surveying the plants again it seemed that there weren't any more damage. That said, I will be investing in some milogranite soon to ward off any more visits...

HAND or actually its early evening here now so, good night!
