Breakfast Buffet...
Posted on Jan 31, 2016 10:16 AM

Good morning and who's hungry?

Well it seems that for a couple of occasions now, I've went out for a stroll around the yard only to discover that something's been hungry.

It seems that one of my seedlings has succumbed to a critter taking a bite out of the new foliage. So far, the first year seeding has been a rapid grower producing a nice fan about 6-7 inches long. That is until something decided to make it breakfast. Well I noticed that it once again became breakfast, yesterday morning. And, low and behold another couple CVs were bitten into as well, today. This seedling along with a few other seedlings are segregated with a couple unknown CVs from my other potted daylily's and are sitting in the grass along the chain link fence. Beyond that is wooded acreage.

There were no tracks discovered nor any scat or any other clues as to what is doing this. Looks like I may have another use for the trail cam mom got me a few years ago...

Maybe when I get the trail cam up, I'll have a few other pictures to share.
Stay tuned...

Delayed Posting...
Posted on Jan 24, 2016 9:00 AM

Delayed posting is just that...

It's been a few days since my last, and a lot has occurred. I took on a severe sinus infection with flu like symptoms that had me down for a week or so. It was perhaps the worst I'd ever experienced. And, just when I start to make recovery, the DW and I received some pretty terrible news. The DMIL has stage 4 lung cancer. So we packed up some things for my DW and drove south. She will stay with mother through doctor visits, treatments etc... I have rounded up the prayer wagons as its about all we can do at this point. Share some prayers and hope that the lord provides us with another miracle...

Not much going on in the way of the garden and landscape these days. Believe it or not, it gets down below freezing here in NW Florida... I know its a heat wave for some, but 27° is cold for my thin blood! : ) The list of mine keeps on growing...

I did however, reserve my first name for a daylily I hybridized some years ago. One more year of noting its characteristics and I'll go ahead and process the registration.

Signing off with again what I will call, HAND (Have A Nice Day)

Banner Day...
Posted on Jan 13, 2016 7:39 AM

Good morning everyone...

Happy New Year and today is a banner day for me. Not only am I getting over Flu like symptoms associated with a severe sinus infection and head cold, but my banner was selected for the site. It is a cropped version of this photo,

As the photo caption states, it was unedited. However, it seems that my particular version of the so called smart phone really highlights the reds of a flower. I guess this could be another vision of lights effect on photos. I love the blues that are highlighted in the stamen and they remind me of the little flame of an old propane heater that is just barely burning. I hope you enjoyed this Banner and photo of 'Wild Horse' as much as I have...

The weather the last few days has been more seasonal with our temps here in the upper 20's at night with a couple of big frost that have sort of put the landscape plants in their true frame of mind for this time of year. I stopped by one of my neighbors home yesterday. I had been meaning to ask if they would like some of the what I will call, commercial landscape plants that were placed in my blank slates landscape. He agreed and in the spring, I will dig and let him have them. They just don't fit my plan and I would rather them go to some one else than trash them. I know I could have run them thru a shredder and mulch or composted them, but... They will look nice where he wants them...

OK, I will sign off with I refer to as HAND (Have A Nice Day)

The road to Trahlyta's Memorial...
Posted on Dec 28, 2015 1:35 PM

A belated Merry Christmas...

The Christmas holiday had me traveling to NE Georgia to spend time with family. A wonderful time was enjoyed and Mom loved the potted daylily gifts that I took to her. If you recall in my first blog post, I called her the enabler. It seems that with my gift of three CVs she in turn had twelve CVs for my new home. But, they were in beds and with all the recent rains I decided that the beds were too wet to dig. Besides, I'm not one for digging and transplanting in December. Even with all the fair weather. I will wait and get them in the spring when she visits.

So as the Headline indicates, the day after Christmas had the DW and I on the roads. We were riding around in the GA mountains and on a particular stretch of road we came upon the resting place of the Cherokee Princes, Trahlyta. I found it fitting that I was wearing my Trail of Tears t-shirt that day. BTW, here is the link http://littlewebtreasures.blog... that was shared by @Lilydaydreamer. It was where I first read about the princess and started obsessing about the CV named after her. I will admit to being one of the guilty GA natives that have passed this by many time without even knowing it was there. Below are the pictures I took;

The DW and I both paid our respects and placed our stones. I did acquire Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Trahlyta') this year and cant wait to drool over her blooms. I also received a wonderful gift of Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Trahlyta's Song') Thanks @Char!

After a wonderful Christmas with family, the missus and I returned home. After arriving yesterday evening, I made a few rounds as I normally do. Observing changes and looking at the plants for new discoveries. Take a look at what I discovered. It seems that with all the fair weather we've enjoyed this fall I discovered that my Rose (Rosa 'Moondance') had bloomed again.

Volunteers and Freebies
Posted on Dec 22, 2015 7:30 AM

Good morning everyone and God bless...

I'm so looking forward to the new year as it will bring the beginning of the transformation to my Blank Slate. Today there is plenty of liquid sunshine falling but I know the other sunshine will return soon. At some point I need to invest in rain barrels to capture some of this free water. Speaking of free, the past weekend had me removing an above ground pool and 12' x 18' pool deck from my former back yard. I gifted it to my next door neighbor whom was more than happy to volunteer in taking it down and to take it off my hands, the second freebie of the post. During the process of clearing a path for our transporting the before mentioned, I was bagging up leaves that I had pilled and left to compost. These will be taken to my new home to distribute in a new area. The pool and deck were free but I wasn’t giving away my organic materials.

Anyway, back to more freebies.

At times during the summer I love to grill pineapple. Slice however you want but leave it at least on half inch thick and sprinkle with cinnamon. Then place directly above the heat of your grill. The sugars caramelize when grilling and oh my, it is delectable. All you need then is some pound cake to place it on and vanilla ice cream to go over the top while its hot. Sorry, drifting here...I am also hungry now!

So, in the process of peeling the pineapple, I have removed the tops leaving about one half inch of the top intact. I usually pot them up and keep as an ornamental. They are beautiful as they grow and I've heard tell, that they'll eventually produce another fruit. I don’t have photos available at this time so I will have to search for them and post another day. Here is a forum @rocklady started back in April '12: The thread "Rooting a pineapple" in Grow a Pineapple Plant

Now, I've not had any luck in the pineapple fruiting department and so after keeping one for three years it was discarded into my composting pile. I had believed it decomposed and processed until Sunday when I was bagging up the leaves. It seems the top had broken down almost completely with exception to about a 1.5" cube. The cube had 4 pineapple plant seedlings growing from it. These were quickly removed, potted separately in the own containers and given a good drink of water. They will be kept indoors in a sunny window until spring. They are really susceptible to the cold so come on spring. I seem to be batting a thousand here in the photo department. I will get some pictures later to share.

Don’t you just love volunteers and freebies. I know I sure do...

Wishing you all an early, but a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year too. I hope you all will be as blessed as I am.
