A Bad Case of Germination (& Planting) Fever
Posted on Feb 13, 2022 4:56 PM

Well, it had been spring weather, but that quickly went away. We had three days consecutively of 50-60F degree weather, even hitting a stunning 61F. I was tempted—but did not give in, I assure you—to start the germination process of my seeds, but my disposition is stronger than that, I just knew that freezing temps were not finished. So, I researched to try and find out why I had this foolish impulse, and concluded that it was because I have a bad case of Germination Fever.

Ok, I know that one can't really be diagnosed with Germination Fever, but I tell you, I came pretty close to being the first human being with a record of having a real, deadly disease by this name. Very close.

I'm soothing my fever by instead thinking of how I am going to start my seeds. Originally, I had just planned on starting them in good 'ol seed starting pots, but then I watched MIgardener (check out his YouTube channel, he has a lot of gardening info) and he has a really uncommon way of winter sowing (he just places his seeds directly in the garden on top of some soil, and places a plastic container over them, on the ground). I think I'm gonna try it out, but we'll see. If I do try it out, I'll probably use an easier-to-grow crop such as a potato or radish, or something of the sort.

Speaking of potatoes, I was starting to get Planting Fever over those. We won't get into what Planting Fever is, because I'm pretty sure you know. Anyway, that fever didn't last too long, for I'm going to be putting those outside pretty soon anyway. The peppers I'm still going to start a bit earlier this year, because we're having unusually warm weather with sun, so it should be ok to start them now. Besides, over here in SD we have a very tight growing schedule anyway, so it will be good to get a head start. And if it doesn't work out, then I've learned my lesson.

They're not big plans, but at least I've got some plans. This year, I'm going to take it easy, and not do too many crops. I can only think of doing one lettuce cultivar, one tomato, one melon, two radishes, one or two peppers, and some potatoes. I think I can handle this small amount.

Until next time,
I tip my hat to you.

It is the 25th of December, which means it is Christmas! Wishing you and all of us a happier, safer, more joyful, and all-around better year than 2021. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Here's to 2022, hopefully 2021 was the last of the Troublesome Duo (2020 & 2021), as I call it.

2020-2021 Drought and Then Some
Posted on Dec 8, 2021 9:23 AM

One can only hope that snow is on its way to us! This is shaping up to be the driest November in SD since '31. Went fishing yesterday, but the lake is so drained that it's been overrun with algae, and all I was bringing back was clumps of algae on the hook and sinker.

Not fun. We really need some water or the fish will die, no doubt. And we've got some natural running rainbows in there, which is quite rare in this country now. Not cool you cursed weather!

No water, but ahh, such a beautiful day. I never thought I'd see the day where my heart yearns not for that one girl for which I want to play a serenade under her window, but yearning oh so sweetly for THE DANG DARK CLOUDS TO COVER THE SUN AGAIN AND GIVE US SOME BLASTED WATER!!!!!

Hah, you thought I was turning into a sappy dude, huh? Thought I had converted to writing romance dramas?

Naw, never going down that path. Sorry, but I'm lactose intolerant and can't handle cheese.

Well, I need to go cool off. This whole drought thing wasn't really bad at first, until my fishing was touched. That's my no-no square. Anything messes with my fishing and I've got to be restrained.

*************

All right, I'm back. Missed me? Thought so.

Well, we haven't gotten our tree yet, but we've got an upstairs and a downstairs so we're getting two. Does this mean double gifts? I dunno, knowing my parents, probably not. They're not so easily tricked. Anyway, we're buying a tree for upstairs and downstairs me 'N' the younger siblings are going to go out on the property and cut down a tree. Unfortunately with Ponderosa Pines, it's kinda hard to find just the right one, but hey, all part of the hunt, right?

No plants to take care of currently, unless you count the Norfolk Island Pine, which can just kind of take care of itself, with just a watering here and there. Really beautiful tree though, and I recommend getting one if you're looking for pretty and forest-y trees.

About a quarter through learning Ancient Greek, but I'm way behind so I've gotta make sure I'm doing double the work every day.

Cheerio!

P.S. I didn't edit the post because I've got to get going on math, so forgive me if you find a whole truckload of errors!

Wolves Confirmed in Colorado
Posted on Dec 4, 2021 7:04 PM

It has been confirmed that wolves have come to Colorado (as of summer 2021). Is this good or bad? Well, Colorado is a pretty populated place so I guess it can go either way. If they stay in the national parks they'll be protected.

Thanksgiving: 400th Anniversary
Posted on Nov 25, 2021 12:40 AM

This year marks the four-hundredth year since the pilgrims settled in an unknown world, not knowing what dangers lurked in every forest and behind every rock. But still they pushed forward, because in the midst of their hard times, they had much for which to be thankful, such as friendly American Indians willing to help, they had their families, and they had the Lord. Let us remember these giants of faith, courage, and all that is right as we celebrate the blessings only able to be enjoyed because of our ancestors who came before us, setting the foundation for which we now live.

Happy Thanksgiving!
