Deer
Posted on Feb 2, 2021 7:16 PM

So we met a really nice lady (a neighbor) who has been feeding the deer for 20+ years. She did it with her husband, but he just recently passed so she does it by herself now. It was so amazing, because she rang a cowbell and 27 deer came rushing to her, and she was petting them and feeding them. There's this one deer that she's known for almost 10 years, and it's the mother of almost all the deer she feeds.

We've always fed the deer, but only one deer (the kids named her "Cloudy", because she had this white spot that looked like a cloud on her forehead) would eat out of our hands. The turkey would come quite close, but we didn't like them being around so much because they would scratch up everything and they were such pigs, LOL. We would feed them a bunch of bird seed, then they would go to the deer and steal their food. The deer wouldn't tolerate it though, go figure.

Still a little bit before any gardening starts, and even though I went screaming through the seed aisle at Menard's and ended up with 26 seed packets in one go we won't be able to grow all of them this year. Still gotta clean up the yard and get things ready for an edible garden, because the majority of seeds we got were for edible things. Johannian can't wait, and he's restless, so I'm hoping spring will come soon, so he can get off of my back. Rolling my eyes. He has everything planned, but probably won't get to do all of it this year. I told him he's planning for some pretty big things, but he said he's gonna get it done. Hey, I've seen kids do things I thought they never could have done, so maybe he'll surprise me.

Two weeks went by already! My son, DIL and granddaughter came over for twelve days, and they're leaving tomorrow, ALREADY. Sighing! well, at least we'll see them again sometime soon, hopefully,

Hope you all had a great day and stay safe!

Nothin' Much
Posted on Jan 18, 2021 1:12 PM

So nothin' much is going on over here, just a bit of snow that melted the next day. We were getting snow flurries, but it was above freezing so none of the snow stayed.

For gardening, I've just been waiting. Waiting for the glorious moment when I can start the art of exploring gardening in SD. Maybe not so glorious when I have gardens with a bunch of dead plants in them...

Went to the local hair stylist with my oldest daughter and we got our hair done. It was so much cheaper than in CA, and an even better job. In CA it was $55, but over here it's $25. I'm very happy with the cuts, and like I said, it's better than any cut I ever got in California.

Sorry for the short post, but I really don't have anything to talk about, I just thought I should check in and post something.

Happy gardening!

Update
Posted on Jan 11, 2021 6:33 PM

An update on the last ten days:

We didn't get anymore snow, but on Jan 9 it was extremely frosty with black ice on the roads. It's the second time in my life I've driven on black ice, and it was so slippery. At one point I was braking, but the SUV kept going forward. Fortunately, I was already going slow, so nothing really bad happened. Amazing how my kids weren't all that scared.

Our furniture for the dining room came. Yay! But oh wait, that's right. One of the twelve chairs we bought didn't come, because it was split in half on the way here. It was good quality Amish furniture, and the delivery people didn't care one single bit if a chair was broken. On top of that, nine of the chairs came with problems (some had disconnected wood pieces, others with large scratches or dents), so my husband is replacing them all. It was ten grand worth of furniture, yet almost all the chairs were messed up. The table was fine, fortunately.

We did a Christmas call yesterday with my son, my DIL and my granddaughter, since they were supposed to come for Christmas, but because of COVID they weren't able to (they live in CA). We opened all of our presents, and then at the end, they announced their last present: my DIL is pregnant with another baby! I'm a grandmother of two now. So happy.

My son (Johannian) and I have planned our gardens: pollinator garden, wildflower garden, sunflower garden, and our fruit/veggie/anything edible garden. Johannian got ten seed packets of various things for Christmas, and we both went to Menard's and got 16 seed packets, so now we have 26 seed packets to grow in the fruit/veggie/anything edible garden!

That's enough for today, but I think tomorrow I'll be posting another wildflower list.

Happy gardening!
