[ Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum Bountiful Blue®) | Posted on June 1, 2022 ]

2022
This variety started blooming early to mid May and is has been making fruits from mid to late May and early June. The fruits are slightly smaller than that of 'Spartan', and more generic store bought blueberries, but there are more fruits on it than 'Spartan'. I have yet to taste a fruit from this one.

[ Loquat (Rhaphiolepis bibas) | Posted on May 30, 2022 ]

The Chinese name for the Loquat is "枇杷". 枇杷 is pronounced as "Pi Pa" or "2Pi 2Pa". 枇 is composed of 木 (mu) and 比 (bi), which put together, is 枇, which is "Pi". 木 means wood, and when used as a side-part-thing, it means that the word is related to woody vegetation, trees, or just wood. 杷 is composed of 木 (mu) and 巴 (ba), which put together, is 杷, which is "Pa".

Note that in this composition, 木 shows the topic of the word, and 比 and 巴 give the sound of the word.

This extremely catchy name is pronounced like "Peee Pahhhh", where both words have the second "sound", where the tone of the word goes up as the word is pronounced.

[ Wax Plant (Hoya krohniana 'Eskimo') | Posted on May 19, 2022 ]

Please be careful when using this name. The word "Esk*mo" is a derogatory term and can be considered very offensive, so PLEASE be careful.

Not sure if this is just a coincidence, this is not even my first year, I've only had this for 3 or 4 months, and it already has 1 pup.

[ Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) | Posted on May 1, 2022 ]

Commonly known as Li Hao, 藜蒿. Not sure about the origin of these 2 words but both have the "grass top" which means it's plant-related. Li Hao's stem and leaves are what is usually consumed, and the cooked flavor is floral, a little like what you could imagine a floral handsoap to taste like.

[ Chinese Mahogany (Toona sinensis) | Posted on April 26, 2022 ]

Known sometimes as Xiang Chun, 香椿. 香 means fragrant, usually in a positive way. 椿 is composed of 2 parts. 木, which means wood, usually tree or bush. In word composition it usually means the word is about building, construction, trees, wood, or shrubbery. 春 means spring or "emerging". Using these 2 parts we can derive that the word 椿 represents how the emerging spring growth is fragrant.

Usually we pick the emerging new growth of the leaves. When picking there is a sometimes unpleasant odor. Once cooked, it's chopped up finely and has a fragrance which is different than the fresh smell. It is usually cooked with tofu and that mix is eaten by itself or with rice (on the side, not usually mixed in). I can't help much with cooking instructions, but you will have much luck with recipes by searching up Xiang Chun.

[ Philodendron 'Rojo Congo' | Posted on April 14, 2022 ]

Rojo Congo, after being treated with chemicals, is sometimes sold as Pink Congo. This is not a real cultivar, just a money-grabbing way.

[ Pansy (Viola x wittrockiana Matrix™ Ocean) | Posted on April 12, 2022 ]

The flowers on this are quite pastel and lavender, but can sometimes be darker depending on age.

[ Bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis 'Abbot Pink') | Posted on April 5, 2022 ]

'Abbot Pink' is a pink/white variety of Texas Bluebonnet. Sometimes, wild patches, though rare, can be found growing.
This variety ranges from nearly white to a nice shade of pink.

[ Siberian Elm (Ulmus pumila) | Posted on March 30, 2022 ]

This tree may as well be the bane of my existence.
The bark is not very fascinating, and the leaves are not very pretty. No interesting fall colors, and no pretty flowers. Its branches are kind of brittle and tend to fall off and smoosh the plants below.

Worst of all, it seeds EVERYWHERE. I have sooooo many seedlngs everywhere. I spend HOURS on end pulling them up. Leave one to grow for a year or even half a year? Well, it's a pain to remove. I have about 15 of that type in my purple island bed.. This year it is my GOAL to remove and just get rid of them.

I think this is suitable for bonsai, but I don't recommend it very much for landscape trees if you have flower beds nearby. You can mow over the seedlings in a lawn... but you have to hand-weed the seedlings in garden beds.

[ Creeping Inchplant (Callisia repens 'Pink Panther') | Posted on March 27, 2022 ]

Not stable, but it generally stays variegated. Sometimes mis-sold as a Tradescantia

[ Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) | Posted on March 26, 2022 ]

This plant can be found in forested areas, usually slopes, sometimes by streams or creeks. Its roots "bleed" red-orange-brown when cut or damaged.
When initially emerging, flower bud(s) emerge wrapped in 1 or 2 leaves, like a taco!

[ Dimpled Troutlily (Erythronium umbilicatum) | Posted on March 26, 2022 ]

Can be found growing in more dry, sloped, sometimes very exposed areas. Flowers are bell-like and don't open up much. Very adorable.

[ Cutleaf Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) | Posted on March 26, 2022 ]

A cheerful spring plant that can be found growing in woodland areas, wet-creek areas, slopes especially. If in a lush area, the blooms can sometimes be mistaken for an extremely upright but somewhat "limp" Claytonia.

[ Chinese Orchid (Cymbidium ensifolium 'Qi Xian Nu') | Posted on March 21, 2022 ]

The name "Qi Xian Nu" (七仙女) roughly translates to "7 fairies". This name is based on folklore/legend about the Monkey King (Sun Wukong).
